One of the United Kingdom’s most prominent LGBTQ+ charities, Stonewall, may be forced to reduce its workforce significantly following the suspension of U.S. foreign aid funding under President Donald Trump’s administration. Reports suggest that as many as half of the organization’s 114 employees could face termination as a result of no longer having the crutch of finances from the United States.
According to The Times of London, Stonewall staff were recently informed of plans for a restructuring effort aimed at ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability and maintaining its ability to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights both in the UK and internationally. However, insiders have warned that this overhaul could lead to substantial job losses within the charity.
Breitbart News reports that over the past three years, Stonewall received substantial financial support from the U.S. government through the Global Equality Fund (GEF), a program designed to promote LGBTQ+ rights worldwide. Records indicate that the charity was granted £137,254 in 2021-22, £204,442 in 2022-23, and £233,583 in the most recent funding period. This financial backing made the American taxpayer one of Stonewall’s largest donors during that time.
Although the charity has cited multiple reasons for its restructuring decision, Chief Executive Simon Blake previously acknowledged that the suspension of U.S. foreign aid could have significant consequences for programs supporting LGBTQ+ communities globally. He noted that U.S. funding had played a crucial role in Stonewall’s work across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, particularly in assisting law enforcement agencies and providing services to victims of anti-LGBTQ+ violence. In response to the funding shortfall, Blake stated that Stonewall would explore ways to minimize the impact of the policy shift.
The organization has been widely known for providing diversity and inclusion training to government departments, media outlets, and educational institutions. Similar to the movement in the U.S., these programs often emphasized the importance of inclusive language, such as discouraging the use of gendered terms like “boys and girls” in favor of neutral alternatives like “learners.” Stonewall also evaluated organizations based on diversity criteria and issued rankings accordingly.
However, the charity has faced increasing public and institutional pushback in recent years, particularly over its stance on gender identity and its perceived downplaying of biological sex. Critics have accused Stonewall of prioritizing transgender advocacy over women’s rights, particularly regarding its support for puberty blockers for minors, adds Breitbart.
The backlash has led several major institutions, including the BBC, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), and media regulator Ofcom, to withdraw from Stonewall’s “Diversity Champions” program. According to The Times, all major UK government departments have also distanced themselves from the scheme.
Hope the charity fails, organizations like this are leaning toward insanity, you can not change your sex because you want. The American taxpayer me does not want any of my tax dollars wasted on insanity, mentally ill people
