Donald Trump has been officially declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election by Congress. In a joint session, lawmakers finalized the announcement of a winner as part of the formal certification process.

Vice President Kamala Harris, in her role as president of the Senate, presided over the session, opening the sealed envelopes containing the electoral vote certificates. Each state’s votes were tallied and announced to the joint session by Harris, who described the responsibility as a “sacred obligation.”

The process follows the guidelines set forth in the Electoral Count Reform Act, passed by Congress in 2022 in response to the January 6th Capitol protests. The act emphasizes the vice president’s ministerial role in the certification process, explicitly limiting any authority to reject or alter electoral votes.

The certification formally concludes the contentious 2024 presidential race, with Trump’s victory now sealed by the constitutional process.
