House Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith, D-Wash, said Thursday morning in an interview with CNN Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to transmit the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate.
It appears a growing number of key Democrats are as exhausted as Americans over the impeachment saga.
“But at the end of the day, just as we control it in the House, Mitch McConnell controls it in the Senate,” said Smith, a top Democrat. “I think it was perfectly advisable for the speaker to try and leverage that – get a better deal – but at this point it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen and yes, I think it is time to send the impeachment to the Senate and let Mitch McConnell be responsible for the fairness of the trial.”
Smith’s high-profile break with Pelosi came as other key Democrats are now breaking with Pelosi’s stance to hold onto the impeachment articles. Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, is also pushing Pelosi to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate, as reported Wednesday in Politico.
“The longer it goes on the less urgent it becomes,” said Feinstein. “So if it’s serious and urgent, send them over. If it isn’t, don’t send it over.”
Pelosi is preparing to hold a morning news conference where she is not only expecting to answer reporters but some key Republicans have told SaraACarter.com they believe she will announce that she is turning over the articles of impeachment.
She is at an impasse with Senate Majority Leader McConnell, R-KY, where she is demanding that McConnell first reveal what rules he will impose on the Senate impeachment trial.
Pelosi and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-CA, claim that the allegation’s that Trump attempted to leverage a White House meeting with the Ukrainian president in exchange for military aid has been widely disputed by Republicans and there appears to be no direct evidence of any such leverage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated repeatedly that he was not aware that Trump ever held aid to his nation in exchange for any meetings. He has also stated that at no time did Trump stipulate that he would only release aid if Ukraine investigated former vice president Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
