Sec. Esper fired before sending reported resignation letter

President Donald Trump has announced a new Acting Secretary of Defense on Monday afternoon, saying he has fired Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

Reports were circling late last week that Esper was drafting a letter of resignation. Esper and Trump have long been at odds with one another, sometimes publicly.

“I am pleased to announce that Christopher C. Miller, the highly respected Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (unanimously confirmed by the Senate), will be Acting Secretary of Defense, effective immediately,” Trump tweeted in a thread.

Adding to the thread, Trump said that “Chris will do a GREAT job! Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service.”
