Update: Due to an editorial error the original article referred to Sultan as have called Obama a liar in the phone conversation, when it was actually the late Saudi King Abdullah.

Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia recalls how Obama lied to a late King about his policies in the Middle East, and says the former U.S. president set the Middle East back twenty years.

Sultan formerly served as the head of Saudi intelligence and ambassador to the US.

He heavily criticized Obama in an interview with Independent Arabia according to a Jerusalem Post report Monday. Bin Sultan cited numerous occasions where the former US president “would promise something and do the exact opposite.”

Sultan recalled a last phone call between the late Saudi King Abdullah and Obama, during which the Saudi leader told the US president said during his last phone conversation with him, “I did not expect that [after] this long life, I would see [the day] when an American president lies to me.”

Obama took the Middle East back 20 years, the prince said. Further, Obama negotiated an unethical nuclear deal with Iran, despite telling the Saudi’s he would put a stop to the regime’s efforts, the prince added.

The list of complaints is long. From Obama not following on his promise to retaliate if Syrian President Bashar al Assad used chemical weapons against his own people and the former administration’s position to bolster the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to delegitimize the state of Israel.

Iran Nuclear Deal

The Obama administration negotiated the multilateral agreement with Iran. According to many critics the deal only propped up Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities. President Trump pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal in May 2018 calling it a ‘horrible’ deal. Obama, however, responded by calling Trump’s actions ‘misguided’.

As part of the deal with Iran Obama sent $1.8 billion in cash to Iran. Following an initial $400 million payment, Iran released four American prisoners. However Obama denied any payment for ransom saying the payment necessary to restore economic instability following years of international sanctions.

Syrian Civil War

In 2012 Obama drew a “red line” with the Syrian government, telling Assad that use of chemical weapons would not be tolerated. Assad used the weapons killing women, children and civilian men. Obama then turned over Syria’s chemical weapons clean up to Russia and did not take any action against the Assad regime.

Former Obama administration officials criticized the former president’s inability to intervene in the ongoing civil war.

“Our administration would never have gotten this done in 48 hours,” one senior Obama administration official told Politico.

Obama allowed both Assad and Putin to have their way in Syria. An estimated 500,000 have lost their lives in the ongoing civil war.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The Obama administration turned its back on its strongest ally in the Middle East, Israel. Obama gave his hand to the free world’s greatest enemies: Iran, Russia, and Syria. In December 2016 Obama introduced a UN resolution calling the Western Wall among several other sacred sites part of Israel’s illegally occupied territory. This gave the Palestinian Authority more power over Israel. It allowed the UN to continue its condemnation campaign against Israel and soiled a foundational relationship with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Obama effectively took Jerusalem away from the Jewish people.

Undoing the Damage

President Trump is now having to reverse Obama’s policies in the Middle East. Trump ripped up the Iran nuclear deal, confronted Assad’s use of chemical weapons with military might, and moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.
