Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report reveals the organization carried out a record-breaking number of abortions while simultaneously receiving its highest level of taxpayer funding to date.

According to the 2023-24 report, Planned Parenthood provided 402,200 abortions during the year. The organization also received $800 million in taxpayer dollars—amounting to more than $2 million per day.

In response, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America criticized the organization’s priorities, stating, “For yet another year, pregnant women seeking help at Planned Parenthood are sold an abortion 97% of the time, while prenatal services, miscarriage care and adoption referrals make up a minuscule minority of the options they offer. Meanwhile their priorities include their assault on parental rights, transgender treatments, and political spending to defeat Republicans.”

The group added, “This report heightens the urgency to defund Big Abortion and stop forcing taxpayers to fund an industry that destroys unborn lives and preys on women and girls.” Planned Parenthood, for its part, emphasized its continued ability to offer abortion services despite new restrictions enacted in nearly 20 states. These laws were passed following the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the authority to regulate abortion to individual states.

National Review reports that efforts to withdraw federal funding from Planned Parenthood have long been a focus for pro-life Republican lawmakers, but some divisions within the GOP have complicated those efforts. As congressional Republicans continue negotiations over a budget reconciliation package, a few centrist House Republicans expressed resistance to cutting funds for the organization, according to NOTUS.

Among those opposed to defunding were Representatives Mike Lawler (N.Y.), Jen Kiggans (Va.), and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), all of whom represent competitive districts. The current proposal on the table would bar Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid reimbursements for non-abortion services. While the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funds from directly covering abortion procedures, pro-life advocates argue that public funding indirectly supports the abortion industry, adds National Review.
