Pelosi calls for 9/11-style commission to investigate Capitol riot
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling for a 9/11-style commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol riot. Her Monday announcement comes after the Senate acquitted former-President Donald Trump last week of charges that he incited the riot.
“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” Pelosi wrote. “To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to ‘investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.”
Pelosi already appointed General Russel Honoré as Counsel to conduct an independent investigation of the Capitol riot and his probe is ongoing.
She added, “As we prepare for the Commission, it is also clear from General Honoré’s interim reporting that we must put forth a supplemental appropriation to provide for the safety of Members and the security of the Capitol.”
Earlier Monday, a group of four Republican congressmen called on Pelosi to answer a number of questions, alleging she caused many of the security failures that day. For example, the lawmakers say, the House Speaker took over an hour to respond to then-Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund’s request for approval of the National Guard.
