After two mass shootings occurred in Dayton, OH and El Paso, TX over the weekend, the country is attempting to pick up the pieces. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke at a vigil Monday where she called on the country to address an ‘international terrorist problem’ of ‘white supremacy.’ Further, the freshman congresswoman compared white supremacists to foreign terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, according to New York Daily News.

“There are so many different issues that are weaving themselves into a braid of violence into our country. One of them is white supremacist terrorism,” Ocasio-Cortez alleged.

According to the news site, a crowd of nearly 500 people gathered in Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza to mourn the loss of 31 lives.

Earlier this year, while questioning FBI Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Michael McGarrity in a hearing on the “Federal Response to White Supremacy”, Ocasio-Cortez asserted that the enforcement community was promoting a “double standard” and prioritizing attacks perpetrated by Muslims over white supremacists.

Ocasio-Cortez referenced the Charleston church and Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue shootings saying they were charged as hate crimes, but not domestic terrorism however, McGarrity stated the DOJ classified both attacks as domestic terrorism cases.
