Musk stated, “We look at the president’s executive orders, and we also just follow the money.” He highlighted that DOGE began scrutinizing USAID due to said violations of presidential executive orders regarding the suspension of foreign aid.

Musk specifically pointed to government-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as a major area of concern. “I think, one of the biggest sources of fraud in the world, is government-funded non-governmental organizations. This is a gigantic fraud loophole where the government can give money to an NGO, and then there are no controls over that NGO,” he explained.

Musk confirmed that DOGE has “pretty much” secured access to the spending data of nearly every government agency. He also emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency, noting that planned expenditure cuts are detailed “line-by-line” on the DOGE website. DOGE is a temporary organization planned to work within the federal government with the goal to cut trillions of dollars in wasteful spending of taxpayer money until July 4, 2026, according to Fox News.

Since beginning the work of the DOGE, Musk has faced criticism to which he responded saying, “What we’re adding here is caring and competence,” adding, “There’s a massive amount of fraud of, basically, people submitting Social Security numbers for Social Security benefits, unemployment, Small Business Administration loans and medical care. We’re trying to put a stop to all of that.”

Musk explained that the DOGE is there to help departments “get a handle on things.” According to Fox News, the DOGE “currently employs a team of about 100 people, with an ultimate goal of 200 workers ranging from information security, software and coding, and finance.”

In the interview, Musk revealed his surprise at being given this role and the opportunity to be able to fix the “enormous” federal budget deficit which is at $2 trillion, noting that his “wake-up call” was learning that America’s interest payments are “higher than our Defense Department budget.”

“If we didn’t do something about this, then there won’t be any money for anything. We’ll just be servicing debt,” Musk said, adding, “Really, I just don’t want America to go bankrupt.”
