Mayor Bowser pushes for DC statehood ‘within the first 100 days’ of new Congress
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser spoke to reporters Thursday, addressing the riots at the U.S. Capitol just one day before. Bowser listed a number of “priorities” she hopes the new Congress will place on the agenda with the incoming Biden administration.
“First, we must get statehood on the President’s desk within the first 100 days of the 117th Congress. Congress must immediately transfer command of the District of Columbia National Guard from the President of the United States and put it squarely under the command and control of the Mayor of the District of Columbia,” Bowser said.
She added, “The Congress must create nonpartisan commission to understand the catastrophic security failures that happened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, both to hold people accountable and to ensure that it never happens again.”
