Vice President Kamala Harris, with just days remaining in her term, had some choice words to say as she partook in a longstanding tradition, adding her signature to the desk drawer in her ceremonial office.

“And I’m not going to go through the laundry list of all of our accomplishments. We know what they are,” Harris said to an audience of current and former staff members gathered. “But I will tell you that everyone here has so much to be proud of, and our work is not done. And as you all know me, because we have spent long hours, long days, and months and years together, it is not my nature to go quietly into the night.”

Harris became the first woman to participate in this decades-long tradition, which includes signatures of past vice presidents who have served before her. She noted that she had met all the signatories, except Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Harry S. Truman. As she signed the desk, the crowd erupted into chants of “MVP!”

“We have each taken on a life and a calling that is about doing work in the service of others and doing it in a way that is fueled, yes, with ambition; yes, with a sense of almost stubbornness about not hearing no; and knowing we can make a difference,” Harris told the crowd.

Harris’ comments on Thursday could allude to her next steps, which she has not spoken about publicly. Speculations include that she may run for California governor in 2026, with current Governor Gavin Newsom unable to seek re-election due to term limits or even prepare for another presidential run in 2028.
