DNC Speeches Blame Trump for America’s Woes, Despite Having Held Executive Branch for 12 of the Past 16 Years
Following the conclusion of Tuesday’s events at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, CNN political contributor Scott Jennings addressed the flaw in the Democrats’ narrative on the state of the country. Breitbart News reports that Jennings, a prominent conservative commentator, pushed back against the notion that former President Donald Trump is solely responsible for the nation’s current woes, highlighting the long-standing influence of the Democratic Party in the executive branch.
Ironically, the Democratic Party is deflecting responsibility for the nation’s issues by placing the blame on Trump, despite their significant influence over the executive branch for most of the past decade and a half. This critique is particularly relevant as the 2024 election cycle ramps up, with Vice President Kamala Harris positioning herself as a key figure in the Democratic campaign.
Jennings pointed out that Democrats have held the presidency for 12 of the last 16 years, a period that spans the two terms of former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) and the ongoing administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, which began in 2021. This extended period of control, he argued, should mean that the party bears considerable responsibility for the state of the nation.
“The gap that I still see in all these speeches, as good as they were, is that Kamala Harris is in the White House right now,” Jennings said during CNN’s coverage of the convention. “Democrats have controlled the White House for 12 of the last 16 years. And for all of the talk about division and the problems in the country, and people are hurting, Democrats have mostly controlled this country.”
Jennings further noted the inconsistency in the Democratic narrative that Trump, who held the presidency for only four of the past 16 years, is to blame for the nation’s current challenges. He questioned how the Biden-Harris administration, which has been in office for over three years, can effectively promise solutions to problems that they have had ample time to address.
“So, to me, that is the glaring hole in this campaign that hasn’t yet been solved at the convention,” Jennings added. “How do you explain all of the problems that will be solved by the person who is currently in there for the last three-and-a-half years and who is supposed to be already working on solving it?”
The DNC has largely focused on promoting the accomplishments of the Biden-Harris administration while emphasizing unity and resilience in the face of division. However, Jennings’ remarks highlight a chink in the Democrats’ messaging.

Canada Beefs up Border Security After Trump Threatened Sweeping Tariffs
In November, president-elect Donald Trump announced on social media that he would impose a 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico if they do not take an active role in containing illegal immigration as well as the level of illicit drugs entering into the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Trump at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, after which the Canadian government vowed to secure the border. “We got, I think, a mutual understanding of what they’re concerned about in terms of border security,” Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc, who accompanied Trudeau at Mar-a-Largo, said of the meeting in an interview with Canadian media. “All of their concerns are shared by Canadians and by the government of Canada.”
“We talked about the security posture currently at the border that we believe to be effective, and we also discussed additional measures and visible measures that we’re going to put in place over the coming weeks,” LeBlanc continued. “And we also established, Rosemary, a personal series of rapport that I think will continue to allow us to make that case.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation reports the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is preparing to beef up its immigration enforcement capabilities by hiring more staff, adding more vehicles and creating more processing facilities, in the chance that there is an immigration surge sparked by Trump’s presidential election victory. The moves are a change in direction from Trudeau’s public declaration in January 2017 that Canada was a “welcoming” country and that “diversity is our strength” just days after Trump was sworn into office the first time.
The Daily Caller notes the differences in response from the Canadian government verses Mexico’s:
Trudeau’s recent overtures largely differ from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has indicated she is not willing to bend the knee to Trump’s tariff threats. The Mexican leader in November said “there will be a response in kind” to any tariff levied on Mexican goods going into the U.S., and she appeared to deny the president-elect’s claims that she agreed to do more to beef up border security in a recent phone call.
