DeSantis threatens to withhold salaries of school officials that enforce mask mandate on students

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced Monday that he would withhold salaries from members of the Florida Board of Education, superintendents and school board members who enforce face masks on students due to COVID-19 in defiance of his mandate to offer parents a choice, according to a statement.
“With respect to enforcing any financial consequences for noncompliance of state law regarding these rules and ultimately the rights of parents to make decisions about their children’s education and health care decisions, it would be the goal of the State Board of Education to narrowly tailor any financial consequences to the offense committed,” said DeSantis’s office in a statement to WFOR-TV.
DeSantis said he is “protecting parents’ rights” and “ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs.”
Here’s part of his statement to CBS4
“With respect to enforcing any financial consequences for noncompliance of state law regarding these rules and ultimately the rights of parents to make decisions about their children’s education and health care decisions, it would be the goal of the State Board of Education to narrowly tailor any financial consequences to the offense committed. For example, the State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law. “Education funding is intended to benefit students first and foremost, not systems. The Governor’s priorities are protecting parents’ rights and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs.”

Oklahoma passes bill banning majority of abortions from ‘moment of fertilization’

Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill into law on Wednesday which bans virtually all abortions “from the moment of fertilization.”
“I promised Oklahomans that as governor I would sign every piece of pro-life legislation that came across my desk and I am proud to keep that promise today. From the moment life begins at conception is when we have a responsibility as human beings to do everything we can to protect that baby’s life and the life of the mother,” Stitt said in a statement. “That is what I believe and that is what the majority of Oklahomans believe.”
The state legislature first approved the bill, which goes into effect immediately, last week. It bans abortions from the moment of fertilization, except for in cases where rape or incest occurred, or where the mother’s life is in danger.
The law also allows for private citizens to sue doctors or those who participate in “producing an abortion for up to $10,000, mimicking the enforcement mechanism in Texas’s fetal heartbeat law” reports National Review.
Under the new law it is a felony offense to perform an abortion, “which will take effect in August unless a court challenge blocks it.”
