Dems urge Biden to ‘relinquish’ his sole authority of Nuclear Weapon launch codes

Nearly three dozen House Democrats urged Joe Biden to “relinquish” his authority as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Nuclear arsenal. They said there is ‘real risk’ for one person alone to be vested with the authority to launch the weapons.

I couldn’t agree more. This may be the only thing I agree with the Democrats on.

Politico Reports:

“Nearly three dozen House Democrats on Monday called on Biden to relinquish his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, in the latest appeal to reform the command-and-control structure so that no single person can initiate a nuclear war”

Politico

In a letter spearheaded by Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-California, along with the support of three dozen Democrats, concern that one person could launch the arsenal can only be mitigated if it requires more people to authorize a nuclear strike.

“Vesting one person with this authority entails real risks,” the letter reads. “Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”

According to the report, letter goes on to say, “while any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so…The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war. Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”
