Two bloggers in China, linked to the communist country’s government, have suggested increasing the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. as retaliation for President Trump’s tariffs, according to CNBC’s Eunice Yoon, the Daily Caller reports. Posts by bloggers Niu Tanquin and the other known as Rabbit Chairman on Chinese social media indicated that China might cease cooperation with the U.S. on controlling fentanyl. Screenshots shared by Yoon on X highlighted that one blogger is affiliated with state-controlled XH News.

The bloggers outlined six potential countermeasures to Trump’s tariffs, including banning U.S. soybean and poultry imports, restricting American films, and halting fentanyl cooperation. Rabbit Chairman criticized the Trump administration for ignoring China’s efforts on fentanyl control and accused it of making “groundless accusations.”

Fentanyl overdose deaths in the U.S. have surged from 2,628 in 2012 to 73,838 in 2022, per Statista, according to the Daily Caller. China resumed cooperation on fentanyl control in 2023 after years of resistance, according to the Brookings Institution. Fentanyl crossing the border was a key issue in the 2024 presidential election as voters expressed serious concerns over the poison reaching Americans at unprecedented levels. Trump appealed to these voters in his determination to address the issue with strong policies that would bring it to an end.

In response to escalating trade tensions, China announced retaliatory tariffs, increasing import taxes on U.S. goods from 34% to 84%, effective Thursday. Meanwhile, Trump declared a suspension of retaliatory tariffs for most countries but raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%.

In an opinion piece on Fox News, David Marcus argues that President Trump’s tariff strategy is a triumph and a significant step toward America’s comeback. Despite criticisms from big media and finance, Marcus emphasizes that Trump’s aim is to reshape American trade, reduce dependence on geopolitical rivals, and restore American manufacturing, even if it means higher costs for goods.

The point of Trump’s tariff turmoil was never tariffs for their own sake; it was and is to reshape American trade and make our nation less dependent on geopolitical and ideological foes such as China,” Marcus wrote. “Those who support the president’s effort to reshore manufacturing and reinvigorate forgotten America don’t care if it happens through tariffs or trade deals. They only care that the jobs come home, even if it means paying more for Chinese widgets.”

Marcus suggested that the move was in line with Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda, and squashing threats against Americans from China while boosting American manufacturing is a definitive factor in the strategy.
