Robert F. Kennedy Jr, President Donald Trump’s Nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, has received enough votes in the Senate Finance Committee to advance to the floor vote.

The committee approved RFK’s nomination by a 14-13 vote along the 27 members’ party lines. Kennedy, 71, is now expected to be considered by the full Senate sometime next week, after he endured over four hours of questioning by the committee last week.

The vote was described as a nail biter, because it was unclear how Senator Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), would vote due to RFK’s history of comments about vaccines.

“My concern is that if there is any false note, any undermining of a mama’s trust in vaccines, another person will die from a vaccine-preventable disease,” Cassidy said. He also questioned whether RFK could “change his attitudes and approach now that he’ll have the most important position influencing vaccine policy in the United States.”

“Let’s be political. I’m a Republican. … I want President Trump’s policies to succeed in making America and Americans more secure, more prosperous, healthier,” he said. Cassidy was vocal on supporting much of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda to combat chronic disease.

On Tuesday Cassidy issued a last minute endorsement indicating a party line vote for Kennedy, and voted with his party in support of RFK’s nomination.
