Biden: Republicans hope people ‘don’t vote at all,’ says ‘21st century Jim Crow assault is real’

President Biden continued to rail against GOP efforts to strengthen election integrity in a speech Tuesday. This comes after he directly called out Texas Governor Greg Abbott over his voting bill. Now, Biden says the whole Republican party “hope[s] people don’t vote at all.”
“They want to make it so hard and inconvenient that they hope people don’t vote at all,” Biden said. “That’s what this is about. This year, alone, 17 states have enacted, not just proposed but enacted, 28 new laws to make it harder for Americans to vote. Not to mention, and catch this, nearly 400 additional bills Republican members of the state legislature have trying to pass.”
“Have you no shame?” Biden asked the GOP to the sound of applause.
Then, he reiterated an old talking point, comparing more election laws to Jim Crow. “The 21st century Jim Crow assault is real,” Biden said. “It’s unrelenting. And we’re going to challenge it vigorously.”
