Beto O’Rourke: If you don’t give up your assault weapons, federal gov is coming for you

Progressive Democrats vying for a 2020 presidential race nomination are taking issue with the second amendment and proposing an all-out ban in response to recent mass shootings in El Paso, TX, Dayton, OH, and Odessa, TX. In an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Tuesday, Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke detailed his plan to confiscate “weapons of war.”

O’Rourke clarified that he doesn’t want to take all guns away, but AR15-s, AK-47s, and the like. “These were designed and sold to the military, to the world to kill people on the battlefield,” said O’Rourke. The consequences for those who refuse to turn in those weapons include door-to-door confiscation. O’Rourke detailed, “In that case there would be a visit by law enforcement to recover that firearm.”

During Tuesday night’s Democratic debate however, Mayor Pete Buttigieg called the proposal a mere “purity test” that wouldn’t garner enough party support. “The problem isn’t the polls, the problem is the policy and I don’t need lessons from you on courage,” said Mayor Buttigieg.

Mayor Buttigieg’s plan includes implementing universal background checks, assault weapons and high capacity magazines bans, red flag laws, and federal licensing registration, while O’Rourke hopes to implement universal background checks, red flag laws, and cessation of assault weapons sales.
